Me And My Mutts

I know that my dogs know me, but lately I’ve realized that they REALLY know me. And that their knowledge is humbling, heart-warming, and also helpful.

Take Suzie, for example. She’s the dog that everyone overlooks – she’s quiet and she doesn’t ask for much, so it is much easier to pay attention to the other three, who always let you know they’re there.

But this morning I noticed something important about Suzie. I began to feel myself getting upset about something – now I can’t even remember what it was…  – but my emotions started to ratchet up, and before I knew it, Suzie had lifted her head and fixed me with her calm, quiet gaze. It was as if we had a silent conversation – “I see you,” she said, and I can see where this might go.” That silent conversation brought me back to earth and reminded me of my priorities – none of which entail allowing myself to wig out about something. Her peaceful spirit reached across our species divide and reminded me of my better self.

So yes, our dogs know us. And that knowledge can lead us back to our better selves. They love us no matter where our emotions may lead us, but how much better it is to accept what they offer – a route to inner calm and peace.
